It’s everyone’s favorite (or most loathed) time of year- New Year’s Resolution time!
Whether you love the idea of a fresh start- or despise this idea when nothing seems to last- most can agree that they have at least one area they would want to change in their life.
Resolutions, or more specifically, wellness resolutions don’t have to be overwhelming or impossible to achieve.
If you’re wanting to keep some goals you have set for yourself, this blog is for you.
I asked dietitians at Idaho Nutrition in Boise, Idaho for their best advice for people wanting to keep a wellness resolution. Surprisingly, they all had very similar responses.

Set Realistic and Achievable Goals
Why it matters: Unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and burnout.
To avoid this burnout the best place to start with wellness resolutions is to set specific, measurable, and realistic goals.
Maggie Capron, Dietitian that specializes in gut health at Idaho Nutrition states, “Be realistic and intentional about the energy and time your goal will take. Often people make big resolutions but don’t have the time to invest in making them happen.”
You may have a big goal but start with smaller steps first to eventually get you to your bigger goal.
If your main goal is to lose 50 pounds, start by taking a look at your daily eating habits. Making a smaller goal of eating the recommended number of vegetables (5-7 servings) a day would be a great first step to reaching your bigger resolution.

Start Small and Build Over Time
The power of small steps: Gradual changes are more sustainable and less overwhelming.
Related to setting realistic resolutions, you also want to start with a small change and build on that change over time.
“You can start with something that is almost too easy,” states Idaho Nutrition Dietitian Medina Blanchet, “and then when you achieve it you gain momentum. You can use that momentum to continue to build on your goal or expand it!”
These small actions may be eating breakfast daily, walking 10 minutes a day, or drinking one more cup of water than you typically do.
Over time these little habits can become easily a part of your routine and then it’s time to add on a new small change.
These small wins can continue to grow your confidence in yourself and help you reach bigger, seemingly harder wellness goals.

If All Your Plans Fail, Pick One Thing
Embrace simplicity: Focus on one achievable action when life feels overwhelming.
No matter how strongly you start out with your new habit, life has a way of getting in the way. There will come a day when everything falls apart.
When you find yourself in that season, it is easy to throw up your hands and quit.
Instead of doing that, weight loss and women's health Dietitian Diane Milward suggests, “Pick out one thing that you’re succeeding at and continue doing it.”
This again will build the confidence in yourself to keep going. Even if the habit is as simple as:
Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning.
Take a five-minute break to stretch or breathe deeply.
Add one nutrient-dense food to your meal.
Being hard and critical of yourself will not end up giving you the desired result. The idea is progress over perfection and celebrating the ability to keep moving forward.
